Rooney joins Beckham, Elvis and The Stig in the dog house
Pet loving Brits up and down the UK have given their furry friends a variety of comedy and celebrity names according to research carried out by The Green Insurance Company.
Footballers, music icons, movie characters and even infamous dictators feature on the list of pet insurance policies that offer protection to the country’s pooches and feline friends.
The survey polled more than 20,000 pet lovers to find the country’s favourite names and titles for their four-legged friends. As well as the glamorous or unusual, the research also revealed the top 10 most popular names across the UK.
The world of sport was represented on the list with pooches and moggies including Beckham, Lampard, Messi and Rooney as well as uniquely, Stoke City striker Ricardo Fuller, whose full name has been bestowed on one lucky kitty.
Musicians were also popular namesakes for the country’s pets with legends such as Elvis, Morrissey, Ringo and Willie Nelson all sharing their famous monikers. Even Irish crooner Daniel O’Donnell and seventies rock outfit Mungo Jerry have been the name of choice for some pet lovers.
Names and faces from Film feature heavily on the policy book including Borat, Bridget Jones, Buzz Lightyear, George Lucas and Samuel L Jackson. TV references are given a nod with names such as Eastenders favourite, Alfie Moon, comedian Harry Hill and Top Gear maverick The Stig. One unfortunate moggy has even landed the unflattering name of Smelly Cat as featured in US sitcom smash Friends.
Strangest of all the names appearing on the list was one unfortunate English Bull Terrier by the name of Adolf Hitler, while most giggles in the office were raised by the imaginatively named cat called Chairman Meow.
We also revealed the top ten most popular names (in order):
- Alfie
- Charlie
- Max
- Molly
- Poppy
- Bailey
- Daisy
- Millie
- Jack
- Bella
