Sheffield Introduce Eco Friendly Hybrid Buses
A fleet of twenty one diesel-electric buses are being launched in Sheffield this week, which claim to cut carbon emissions by 30%.
The launch is part of a campaign by Stagecoach Yorkshire, each bus will use 20,000 fewer gallons of diesel each year. It is hoped that they will encourage more members of the public to use public transport.
Paul Lynch, managing director of Stagecoach Yorkshire said: "We are proud to be introducing these new vehicles, which will provide customers with the same safe and reliable service but also cut carbon emissions and show our commitment to attracting non-bus users to public transport.
"Our passengers will therefore enjoy the dual benefits of a cleaner, greener bus service and smoother ride."
The £6m fleet, partly funded with £2m from the government's Green Bus Fund, will be powered by a combination of diesel engine and an electric motor, with the electricity supply generated by braking.
